BSA: 2019 Accessible Design Award
The Boston Society of Architects (BSA) presented Caolo & Bieniek Associates with the 2019 Accessible Design Award for our work at Westfield State University’s Davis Hall at their annual Awards Gala in January, 2020.
The award honors design excellence in buildings that are accessible for persons of all abilities, with an emphasis on projects that exceed the legal accessibility requirements in anticipation of diverse user needs and benefits..
Renovations began with a new four story addition that improves accessibility and accommodates for new program. The sleek glass framed main entrance connects students to their campus draping natural light across new circulation zones. This design provides an anchored entrance accessible to all.
At the core a double sided elevator ushers students up and through the new open area lounges occupying each floor. Bright color pallets of green, orange, magenta bring to life student work and recreation areas. The inclusion of lounges gives all students access to a space a growth and learning within their dormitory.
Connection continues throughout the residence hall with the reconfiguration of the first floor. A one story addition bridges circulation paths allowing students to flow through the dormitory building right into the commons building.
Function and accessibility have been reintroduced to Davis Hall at Westfield State University with a new and bright experience in store for each student.
