Completed in 2016, the West Springfield Public Library underwent a significant transformation that combined historic preservation with modern expansion. The project involved the restoration of the original 1916 Carnegie Library, a Classical Revival structure, and the construction of a new 32,000-square-foot addition to better serve the community's evolving needs.
The original Carnegie building was meticulously restored to serve as a gracious reading room, with a new standing seam roof, and a reimagined front entry that echoes its classical style
A 2-story lobby now connects this space to the new addition, which houses the main collection, children's and young adult rooms, a 150-seat community meeting room, a computer lab, a local history room, and various reading and study areas. Large expanses of heat-rejecting glass infuse the interiors with natural light, creating an inviting atmosphere for patrons.
Designed with sustainability in mind, the project achieved LEED Silver certification. Energy-efficient systems, including LED lighting and advanced HVAC solutions, were implemented to enhance environmental performance. The library reopened to the public in January 2016 and was officially dedicated on April 2, 2016, marking the centennial of the original building's opening.
